Exhibition Design- Lois (07.05.10)
After considering our design options, Lois has put forward an idea for the exhibition design. The image map shows an initial idea/theme of the exhibition.

The idea is based on presenting the show as a time line of events (structured around the Theatres name change/important events and is shown from Frank Matcham's point of view).

The archive material we have secured would need to be reconsidered to test the designs practicality. The idea though could tie in nicely with the idea of performance/spaces and also with the Memories/Reminiscences Young people play.

  1. I like the idea of Matcham's point of view. I think a character-based view frames the information in a way which could be accessible to everyone. I often get resistance when I'm organising supported museum visits for families in need, along the lines of ... "we can't go because we don't know anything about history". That always makes me sad because it reflects the preconceived notion that museums are only for the already well informed. I've found that 'walking through time' with a character really helps with these kinds of responses.

Could we ask visiting children to speculate about what Matcham would think about the theatre today and to draw us a cartoon as a way of getting responses to the exhibition/Open Days?...maybe through a small art competition with some donated art materials as the prize?

  2. It's great to hear that from someone who has had firsthand experience of customer feedback of exhibition visits.

I think asking children/young adults and adults alike to comment on what Matcham would say/think is a great idea and something that could be developed and sustained.

I think also that if we did go for this idea we could work it in with the Open Day and if we can get someone to act as Matcham (I was thinking of Simon Callow - he's performing as Shakespear - 'The man from Stratford' at the mo which is handy)then it would be a really exciting and fresh performance for everyone...this may be an ask!!!
